Characteristics

All casters designed and manufactured by Caster Concepts are made from 100% steel components. This includes steel top plates, either forged or fabricated, and yoke bases, also either forged or fabricated. The legs of all our casters are laser-cut from steel, formed using a brake press, and welded to the corresponding yoke base. Caster components such as brakes and locks are also made from steel. Once the components are built, the yoke and top plate are assembled into a functional swivel frame using steel ball bearings and steel fasteners. From the Caster Concepts 51 Series through the 99 Series of domestically manufactured casters, every single one is made entirely of steel components. In many cases, the steel components may also be heat-treated to enhance product durability.

Some people refer to steel casters as a caster containing a steel wheel. This makes more sense since it was mentioned that all Caster Concepts products could be called steel casters due to their components. Typical steel caster wheels would be forged steel wheels. These wheels are typically designed to carry heavy loads (relative to their size). A forged steel wheel is manufactured in a forging process where a steel bar is heated to approximately 2180 degrees Celsius (steel melts at 2480 degrees Celsius). While at that temperature, the billet is hammered into a net-like shape and then cooled. After the wheel has completely cooled, it can be machined to its final dimensions using CNC machines for precise sizing. To further complicate the description of a steel wheel or a stainless steel wheel, some people may refer to a “cast wheel” as a steel wheel because it appears to be made of steel. Cast wheels can be made of gray iron or ductile iron and are rated to carry lower loads than a steel wheel. When ordering or searching for a steel caster, be aware that the term “steel caster” can refer to a variety of products, as they may not be what you need.
